MOSCOW, December 3 – A thigh strain has forced Zenit St. Petersburg striker Alexander Kerzhakov out of his team’s Champions League clash with AC Milan on Tuesday, the Russian club said Monday.
Kerzhakov is the Russian league’s top scorer with 10 goals so far this season, and scored the winner as Zenit defeated Anderlecht 1-0 in the Champions League in October.
He joins a growing injury list for the Russians, with left-back Domenico Criscito, defender Aleksandar Lukovic, and winger Vladimir Bystrov all missing. On-loan full-back Renat Yanbaev is a league regular but not registered for Europe.
Their absences could damage Zenit’s hopes of taking third place in Group C, and the resulting place in the Europa League, which requires them to achieve the same or better result in Milan as Anderlecht manage away to Malaga the same day.
A squad list on the Zenit website lists Hulk and youngsters Luka Djordjevic and Maxim Kanunnikov as the forwards who have traveled to Milan.
Malaga and Milan have already secured their places in the knockout stages as Group C winner and runner-up respectively.
Milan will be without midfielder Riccardo Montolivo and defender Daniele Bonera for the Zenit game due to injuries, while coach Massimiliano Allegri is set to rest star striker Pato and goalkeeper Christian Abbiatti, a source at the Italian club told R-Sport on Sunday.
