The Wissol Group has left the Georgian Top League football team Torpedo Kutaisi. It had been financing the Imeretian club since August 2010. The club’s 12 000 capacity stadium was renovated in the same year, and now satisfies UEFA standards.
Wissol invested up to GEL 5 million in Torpedo in total. However, its tenure has been accompanied by conflicts with the club’s main supporters group.
Recently, Wissol decided to conduct personnel changes in the squad, focussing on young talented players. However, the move has not been rewarded with success. The club currently occupies the 9th spot in the league table, and most recently was beaten 5:0 by WIT-Georgia.
Precisely why Wissol has decided to leave Torpedo, is currently unknown. Spokesmen for the company have been declining to comment on this issue for the past couple of days.
It is also uncertain, as to who will take over the funding of the club – the Kutaisi Mayor’s Office has already declared that it does not have the resources in its budget to support Torpedo.
