Did Vano Merabishvili demonstrate favouritism towards his friends’ companies? A spokesman for the National Audit Service has told TV3 that the company Algorithm enjoyed special privileges under the previous government. The company belongs to Giorgi Korakhashvili, a close friend of Mr. Merabishvili.
The Audit Service has discovered that in November 2011, the Ministry of Internal Affairs purchased 5000 tablet computers from Algorithm at a cost of 2 million GEL, following negotiations with a single individual. In July 2012, the Ministry went on to purchase further 2000 tablets for one million GEL through a tender. As a result of the deal, the MIA has paid Algorithm Ltd. 749 000 GEL in additional costs. A sum totalling around 30% over the market value of the items was paid by the Ministry for the purchases. The case has been handed over to the law enforcement agencies for investigation. The owner of Algorithm Mr. Korakhashvili has not deemed it necessary to comment on the issue. Charges have already been brought earlier against Lukhum Kapanadze – another friend of Mr. Merabishvili – and his company New Energy.
