The level of unemployment has increased by 7% this year, according to the statement made to TV3 by the chairman of the Trade Unions Council Irakli Petriashvili. The statistics available to him differ radically from those stated by the government, and show an increase in unemployment from 16% to 23% during the current year.
The chairman of the Employers’ Union has also been speaking about an increase in the level of unemployment nationwide, though he has been unable to specify a figure. In contrast, the Employment and Social Services Minister Paata Zhorzholiani states that preliminary data allows the government to suggest that the level of unemployment has actually fallen this year. The final statistics, based on the Sakstat data, will be published at the end of the year.
