The two month prison sentences received by the senior members of the Tbilisi Mayor’s Office will be appealed. The officials were sentenced by a civil court in Rustavi yesterday. At first, the presiding judge had planned to release the defendants from custody, due to the violations during their arrest process. Speaking to the journalists about the judge’s eventual verdict, the Mayor of Tbilisi Gigi Ugulava declared that the court had been placed under pressure by the prosecution, but has so far failed to substantiate this claim. The senior members of the Mayor’s Office were arrested at the end of last week by the Finance Ministry’s Investigation Department, on charges of misappropriation and embezzlement of up to 50 million GEL.
