The Pope calls on followers to use social networks to spread their faith to non-believers

After having joined the popular microblogging site Twitter last month, Pope Benedict XVI has – in a recent address delivered on the 47th World Communications Day – asked his followers to effectively use the online social-networking route to spread their faith to non-believers.

The address – titled `Social Networks: portals of truth and faith; new spaces for evangelization’ – underscores that popular online social-networking sites have apparently struck a chord with the Pope, who is of the opinion that social networks, like Twitter and Facebook, have created a public forum which encourages debates and discussions.

According to the Pope, debates and discussions which the social networks foster can “reinforce the bonds of unity between individuals and effectively promote the harmony of the human family.”

However, the Pope, 85, also warned alongside in his address that the “culture of social networks” seemingly poses a challenge to those people who want to talk about “truth and values,” because the message can apparently get drowned in the clamor of celebrities and marketing.

Urging his followers to use the present-day digital world, social networks in particular, to reach out to non-believers, the Pope said in his address: “The challenge facing social networks is how to be truly inclusive: thus they will benefit from the full participation of believers who desire to share the message of Jesus and the values of human dignity which his teaching promotes.”
