Are the funds allocated to the Environment Protection Ministry from the state budget sufficient for carrying out environment protection projects? The ministry’s budget for 2014 has been increased by 2 million Lari compared to the previous year, and will consist of GEL 27 800 000. However, according to a statement from the Parliamentary Committee on Environment Protection, the funds allocated to the ministry cannot be regarded as an increased budget if one takes into account the funding required for the newly created departments. The head of the committee Gia Tsagareishvili has told TV3 that at least an additional GEL 2 million are required in order to conduct environment protection projects effectively.
Spokesman for the Caucasian Environment Protection NGO Network Kakha Bakhtadze has stated that in the light of the existing ecological situation in the country, environment protection should be among the government’s priorities. According to him, doubling the ministry’s budget is necessary to get the newly created services working appropriately. The allocation of adequate resources would enable significant preventive measures both from the environment protection and healthcare aspects, Mr. Bakhtadze has added.
