The charges against Vano Merabishvili have been aggravated by Nino Burjanadze’s testimony, according to the former Prime Minister’s attorney. He also states that Mr Merabishvili is refuting all charges against him, and is claiming to be the victim of a political witch-hunt. In response, Ms Burjanadze accuses the former PM of baseless attempts to politicise the case against him.
Mr Merabishvili is being charged with abusing his powers in relation to the Sandro Girgvliani murder case – namely, staging a mock investigation with the purpose of covering up and falsifying information regarding the identity of the perpetrators; falsifying evidence; arranging for the perpetrators to receive privileges while serving their sentences; and aiding their early release.
