Is the 2015 Youth Olympic Festival in Tbilisi under threat? According to the Tbilisi Mayor’s Office, if the necessary sum of GEL 35 million will not be allocated from the city budget for the festival, then Tbilisi’s prospects of staging the event will be jeopardised. Aleksandre Japaridze, the Deputy Director of the 2015 Youth Olympic Festival Organisation Committee, has stated that the event is being financed by the Mayor’s Office, and the planned budget reductions will have an impact upon the committee’s capabilities. According to him, failure to stage the event will have a negative impact upon the country’s image internationally.
The agreement regarding the construction of the Olympic village was signed between the Georgian government and the Chinese company Xualing in 2012. Company spokeswoman Tinatin Shishinashvili has told TV3 that construction works are proceeding on schedule, and that there is no danger for them to be halted. According to her, the complex will house the participants and guests of the Youth Olympic Festival for 3 months, after which the properties can be purchased by anyone in Georgia. Up to $150 million will be invested in the construction project until 2015, and works are being carried out on an area 520 000 m2, Ms. Shishinashvili informs.
The Youth Olympic Festival will be staged 26-31 July 2015.
