New public buses could be introduced in the capital. The Mayor of Tbilisi Gigi Ugulava has asked for the fleet of public buses to be upgraded, and for additional funds to be allocated for this purpose. The Mayor’s initiative has received partial support from the deputy chairman of the Tbilisi City Council Jaba Samushia, who states that the proposal has to be studied in detail. According to him, some of the yellow buses that were brought in under the previous government had technical defects, and did not comply with international standards.
The Mayor’s Office has declined to comment on this issue. Mr. Ugulava has recently addressed the City Council with a request to increase the city’s budget by an additional 17 million GEL in order to finance improvements in the public bus system, kindergarten infrastructure, and the water supply system in the areas newly acquired through city expansion.
