The Tbilisi City Council will today discuss the issue of electing a new Chairman. The new majority within the Council is expected to name Irakli Shakhiashvili from the Freedom faction as the candidate. Conflicting statements have been made with regards to his possible candidacy. The head of the Georgian Dream faction Guliko Zumbadze has stated that he would not be backing Mr. Shakhiashvili, due to the latter having been selected by the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Members of the United National Movement faction have added that the legislation prohibits deselecting an existing Chairman of the Council and electing a new one at the same session. The post of the Chairman has been occupied by Zaal Samadashvili since 2010.
