Pop idol Taylor Swift has accepted the offer of a date from Kevin McGuire, a Stratford teenager who’s battling cancer. But the singer says she can’t attend McGuire’s prom so she’s invited him to a country-music awards show instead.

“Kevin, I’m so sorry but I won’t be able to make it to your prom,” Swift said in a message posted to her Facebook page this afternoon. “But I was wondering, the ACM (Academy of Country Music) Awards are coming up. Would you be my date? Love, Taylor.”
McGuire, an 18-year-old senior at Sterling High School in Somerdale, has attracted tens of thousands of Internet supporters in his bid to bring Swift to the June 1 prom. The country-music ceremony is to be held April 1 in Las Vegas.
McGuire didn’t need to check his calendar to give an answer.

“Obviously I said yes,” said McGuire, who’s currently being treated at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. The country-music event “is a lot better than the senior prom.”
At the same time, he acknowledged, “I’m sick and I’m not sure if I’m able to.”

ORIGINAL STORY: Kevin McGuire promises to open the door for his prom date and pull out her chair. He vows to treat her with respect and do his best not to step on her feet.
All pretty normal commitments for a high school senior who’s trying to woo his dream date. What perhaps makes his pleas different is the target of his invitation.
McGuire, who’s battling leukemia for the second time, is seeking a prom date with pop icon Taylor Swift.
Tens of thousands of people, in New Jersey and across the nation, have rallied behind his effort.
Three days ago, Kevin’s older sister, Victoria McGuire, created a Facebook page intended to catch the singer’s attention. It’s called “Taylor Swift Take Kevin McGuire to Prom!” and features a picture of the 18-year-old in his Stratford High School Silver Knights football uniform.
The page, which Victoria initially thought would reach only her own Facebook friends, had more than 60,000 supporters by Thursday night. On Twitter, backers of (POUND)teamkevin have been tweeting almost every minute.
“The community has been very supportive of me,” said Kevin McGuire, who initially was diagnosed as a 13-year-old in January 2007 and who appeared to have beaten the illness in April 2010.
Swift, 22, has not yet commented regarding her invitation, but Victoria McGuire’s opinion is clear.
“Nothing, and I mean nothing, brightens Kevin’s day more than Taylor Swift,” she notes on the Facebook page. “Kevin deserves more than anyone else a special event in his life and the one thing he wants is to go to prom with Taylor Swift!”
The prom is set for June 1, McGuire’s birthday. According to Swift’s website, she has no events scheduled for that day.
The Facebook and Twitter followings are just the beginning of support for McGuire, who currently is hospitalized. At Sterling, several seniors are selling T-shirts and sweatshirts with a Superman logo on the front, and the message, “Team Kevin. We support our Superman” on the back.
McGuire has been accepted to both Rowan University in Glassboro and St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia. He plans to study psychology in college, and then counsel children with cancer after graduation.
“Everyone here loves Kevin, and many of our students have known him for years,” said Bill Scully, McGuire’s guidance counselor at the Somerdale school. “To see his dream come true would mean a lot to them.”
