What is the situation like in Georgia with regards to employee salaries, compared to other countries? According to Business Insider data, Russia has one of the world’s lowest minimum wages, at an equivalent of 97 US cents per hour. Australia heads the list at 17 USD per hour, with France in second place at 12.99 USD per hour. According to expert calculations, the monthly minimum wage in Georgia ranges between 40 and 135 GEL. According to the expert Soso Archvadze, this is a very small amount, when set against the background of the minimum living amount. The hourly minimum salary in Georgia constitutes a mere 8% of that in an average European Union country. An increase in the average salary does not lead to an improvement of the socio-economic situation in the country, as the level of unemployment remains high, Mr. Archvadze explains.
At the National Statistics Centre, only the average monthly salary figure for those in official employment is available, and constituted 753 GEL as of 2012.
