Is there a realistic possibility of one of Russia’s largest energy companies investing in Georgia? Talks about RusHydro’s plans for Georgia began in April 2013, during the company leadership’s visit to the country. During a meeting with the Energy Minister, the Russian delegation expressed its interest in the Georgian market. However, according to Kakha Kaladze, the first meeting was of an introductory nature, and no specific projects have been discussed thus far.
The head of the Investment Agency Giorgi Pertaia has reiterated that there has been active interest from large and medium scale Russian investment companies towards the Georgian hydro and tourist sectors. According to him, it would be inappropriate to speak about specific projects while preliminary technological works are still ongoing, and precise figures will only become known once the contracts are finalised. However, the talk is of large scale investments, Mr. Pertaia has added.
