Why was the Geo-Hospital branch in Tetritskaro making losses? TV3 continues to investigate the issue. The management at the hospital has been speaking openly about the low number of patients and the lack of income. According to Giorgi Kvirikadze, the Health Ministry’s expert group which was coordinating the construction of hospitals in the province several years ago made errors in assessing the local circumstances, while the inexperience of the insurance companies added to the problems. According to Mr. Kvirikadze, the situation was further exacerbated by the review in the insurance policy, which had originally guaranteed free care for those living below the poverty line. Prior to the most recent parliamentary elections, the Health Minister extended the insurance policy to cover everyone, leading to an increase in the number of patients, and the insurance company posting losses. The president of the Insurance Institute Giorgi Gigolashvili has told TV3 that dangers for the insurance companies relating to the construction and management of the hospitals were evident as early as during the tendering process itself in 2010. According to him, responsibility for the recent department closures at the Tetritskaro clinic must be shared equally by the companies and the State.
