Passenger and cargo trains will continue to travel through Tbilisi. The railway bypass project has been suspended for an unknown period of time. The Minister of the Economy has told TV3 that a final decision regarding the project has not been made yet, and it will be shelved for a certain period of time.
The shelving of the project has been confirmed by the Georgian Railways, who say that it would be a loss-making exercise. According to the head of the supervisory board, negotiations are currently taking place with the contractor about making changes to the project, in order to make it profitable. The Mayor of Tbilisi has demanded a meeting with the government regarding this issue. The planning of the railway bypass project began several years ago, and was supposed to cost 300 million USD.
