Up to 850 000 citizens in need of social support, and queues outside the Liberty Bank branches – why do pensioners have to wait in long queues in order to obtain their funds? Are the bank’s service centres to blame, or the pensioners’ lack of knowledge of various banking services and the use of their bank cards? Beneficiaries have once again come to collect their increased pensions from the Liberty Bank service centres and ATMs this month. According to them, they had to wait for at least half an hour to collect their funds.
According to a statement from the Liberty Bank, over 50% of pensioners have collected their funds within two days of their accounts being credited. The bank’s Financial Director Zurab Tsulaia insists that these figures show that there are no problems with regards to the service at its branches. He adds that the queues are temporary occurrence.
Giorgi Kakachia, the head of the Health Ministry Social Department, has stated that the long queues are a logical consequence of the fact that the majority of the beneficiaries chooses to collect funds directly from the bank cashiers, being unaware of the alternative methods of obtaining the funds. However, according to the expert Giorgi Abashishvili, the bank must employ additional personnel on such days, in order to avoid the long queues.
Liberty Bank has the exclusive rights to distributing social benefits and pensions until 2014, and is not being paid commission fees by the State. According to a statement from the Ministry of Health, it is possible that an agreement regarding the distribution of social funds will be signed with several banks after 2014. On its part, Liberty Bank has already expressed its willingness to participate in next year’s tender.
