Will there be a freeze on mortgage-related evictions? The issue has been brought up by the member of the parliamentary majority Gedevan Popkhadze. His initiative would see evictions being halted until 1 February 2014. According to the official statistics, 66 evictions have taken place since the beginning of the year for various reasons, the chief of them being failure to keep up with mortgage payments, a National Enforcement Bureau spokesman has stated. A further 266 families are said to be in danger of losing their properties. A spokesman for the Ministry of Justice has stated that a special task group is currently working on the issue, and that ultimately, their document must ensure that citizens’ rights are being protected when entering into an agreement with mortgage lenders.
