Will there be competition for TAV Georgia? The Prime Minister has recently told journalists that he was having discussions with the Finance Minister about whether to have a new airport constructed, or to have the runway replaced at the present location. Mr. Ivanishvili states that he hopes to be able to rely on TAV on the issue of airport development, but if the Turkish company were to fail in this task, then the government would turn to someone else. According to the Prime Minister, alternatives to TAV are being explored. The construction of the new runway has been halted for the past 9 months, and only 3% of the work has so far been completed. Negotiations regarding a new contract between the Georgian government and TAV are currently ongoing, and are expected to conclude by the end of the month. TAV Georgia has announced that the project of constructing a new runway will cost 65 000 000 USD. Currently, the airport has 4 runways of 2500 meters in length, while the new strip was meant to be 3000 meters long.
