“Closeness to Europe is a matter of choice, and I would like to congratulate Georgia for making this choice,” the EU ambassador to Georgia, Philip Dimitrov, stated at a conference in the Tbilisi Marriott, which was organised to summarise the results of the recent summit in Vilnius. According to Mr Dimitrov, the choice has been made with a view towards a better future for the country.
“I would like to start by explaining what Georgia has achieved. Recently, the country ratified an association agreement with the European Union in Vilnius. Of course, closeness to Europe is a matter of choice. I have said this many times before, and I would like to congratulate Georgia for making this choice, which has been made with a view towards a better future for the country. We are monitoring the attitudes of Georgian people, and I would like to tell you that pro-western democratic policies have great support among the population. Such a strong backing facilitates the work for the government, and guarantees that this course will be maintained,” Philip Dimitrov stated, adding that Georgia is likely to reap the rewards from the agreement in a year’s time, when the document comes into force. This, however, will require a huge effort, according to the ambassador.
“The association agreement does not only determine the institutional structure for our relations, but it has a deeper content – it means that we must maintain democratic values and balanced approaches among various branches of the government,” Mr Dimitrov stated.
Furthermore, the EU ambassador spoke about Zurab Zhvania, stating that the latter deserved to have his name remembered at all times.
“I had the honour to know this man personally. He was one of the leaders of the ‘Rose Revolution,’ who took the responsibility to bring Georgia onto the path towards Europe. He deserved to have his name remembered at all times,” Mr Dimitrov declared.
The conference, titled ‘Eastern Partnership – the Road after the Vilnius Summit,’ has been dedicated to Zurab Zhvania’s 50th anniversary.
