Obtaining education in the United States, or missing parliamentary sessions due to family circumstances? The NGO Transparency International Georgia has spoken out against the MP Mariam Sajaia, claiming that she is not entitled to the GEL 4000 monthly salary that she collects. The NGO’s position has been shared by the parliamentary majority MP Zakaria Kutsnashvili, who states that the issue needs to be studied by the Parliament.
In contrast, members of the parliamentary opposition do not regard Mariam Sajaia’s travels to the US for the purposes of furthering her education as alarming. According to Davit Darchiashvili of the United National Movement, her actions are not in breach of the law. Sergo Ratiani adds that prior to travelling to the US, Ms Sajaia had addressed the Parliament with a special statement.
Mariam Sajaia is the only member of the current Parliament to travel abroad for studying purposes.
