    The 26th round of the Geneva talks has come to the end. The Georgian delegation returned to Tbilisi early this morning. According to its members, the emphasis during the meeting was placed upon the recent installation of barbed wiring at the line of occupation, and upon the needs of the local population.
    Other issues discussed included the locals’ freedom of movement, ceasefire agreements, human rights issues in the zone of occupation, and other problematic matters. The next round of talks is scheduled to take place in Geneva in March next year.


  • Fire in Kakheti

    A family of 15, including infants, has been left homeless as a result of the fire in the village of Karajala in the Telavi region. The fire has not claimed any lives, though it completely burned down the Abdulakidze family’s house.
    The family did not manage to rescue any household items. According to preliminary reports, the fire was caused by old electrical wiring. Local fire brigades were mobilised at the scene of the accident.

    Russia’s decision to invest $15 billion in ‘brotherly’ Ukraine, as well as grant a $7 billion gas discount was pragmatic and based on economic facts, President Putin said at his annual press conference on Thursday.

    The economies of Russia and Ukraine are closely connected, with trade at $17 billion, and Russia’s “generous gift” to Kiev, as many dubbed it. In fact, it was a well thought out and pragmatic decision for Russia, Putin told over 1,000 reporters on Thursday.

    The Public Defender, Ucha Nanuashvili, has demanded an investigation into Vano Merabishvili’s claims. He visited the former Prime Minister in the Matrosov prison today.
    According to Mr Nanuashvili, he was told by Mr Merabishvili that pressure had been applied on him by the Prosecutor General. The prison meeting between the Public Defender and the Secretary General of the United National Movement lasted for an hour and a half.

    The former Administrator of Old Tbilisi, Lasha Purtskhvanidze, and his deputy, Koba Kharshiladze, have been released on bail, which has been set by the judge at GEL 400 000.
    The prosecution had demanded that both of them be incarcerated, but its motion was not backed by the judge.
    The former Administrator of Old Tbilisi, Lasha Purtskhvanidze, and his deputy, Koba Kharshiladze, are facing charges of money laundering, which, in accordance with Article 194 of the Criminal Code, is punishable by 9 to 12 years of imprisonment.
