Whilst the IMF is forecasting a rise in unemployment, the National Statistics Service is talking about an increase in employment. According to the Sakstat data, the number of people employed in the business sector during the first half of 2013 – in the manufacturing, agriculture and service areas – has increased by 452 compared to the same period last year. In contrast, a negative trend is evident in the construction sector.
According to a statement from the United Trade Unions, the statistics do not reflect the full picture, since the majority of the employed have a self-employed status. According to the Association of Employees, the only way to halt the rise in unemployment is by taking the interests of the employees into consideration.
The Ministry of Health has not finished working on the State Employment Support Programme yet. According to the ministry, the programme will provide the State with precise information about the vacancies in specific areas. The programme will give those seeking employment the opportunity to place their own information on the website, while also providing information about the available vacancies. The IMF plans to review its forecasts with regards to unemployment figures at the end of the year.
