BP entered a plea of not guilty Tuesday in federal court in New Orleans that is part of its $4.5 billion criminal settlement with the U.S. government over its role in the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill.
According to al.com, legal experts said the plea was a procedural move paving the way for a later guilty plea.
BP announced earlier this month that it will plead guilty to manslaughter, obstruction of Congress and other charges, and pay a record $4.5 billion in penalties to resolve a federal probe of the Deepwater Horizon disaster.
