The Finance Minister, Nodar Khaduri, has stated that the proposed 2014 State Budget will provide an increase in salaries. Mr Khaduri responded to criticism from the opposition by claiming that the United National Movement still wants us to “live in a lie,” while in reality, things are changing for the better in the country.
“The pensions have increased twice in 2013, and there has been an increase in benefits. By the way, while we were working on next year’s State Budget, the UNM was criticising us for not increasing the salaries for policemen. Now we are raising the salaries of policemen, judges, teachers and employees of the Prosecutor’s Office,” Mr Khaduri stated on the Big Politics show.
With regards to the issue of the increased presidential salary, the Finance Minister remarked that members of the previous government have no moral right to criticise the salaries of either the President of the MPs, since the previous President lived off the State Budget, in addition to his set salary.
“The former President was enjoying spa massages at the expense of the State. Tens of thousands of Lari were paid from the State Budget for his children’s education. This was not part of the presidential salary, but he had other benefits at the State’s expense, to say nothing about his travels, three airplanes, five helicopters, and palaces which cost millions to build,” Mr Khaduri stated.
The Finance Minister added that he will accept no criticism from the UNM, as the country was in a far more critical state during their time in government.
“It would be better for the UNM to think about its own past, and apologise at least once for the misery that they brought to so many people,” Mr Khaduri remarked.
