What is the Infrastructure Ministry’s response to the President’s comments regarding the port of Lazika? During a meeting with investors in Batumi, Mikheil Saakashvili talked about the planned construction of the port, and claimed that funds allocated for its construction were directed elsewhere by the new government. According to the President, building the port at Lazika is one of the key pre-requisites for the development of the economy.
The Deputy Minister of Infrastructure Shota Murghulia has described the President’s comments as abstract, and has stated that no funds were allocated for the construction of the Lazika port in the 2013 budget. According to him, the financing of the construction works was meant to be carried out by private investors, while the State was unable to provide funds towards the project. However, Mr. Murghulia does not rule out the possibility of it being co-financed by the government in the future, while the public infrastructure will be funded from the State budget. He confirms that the construction of the Lazika port is an important project for the country’s economy, while construction costs are expected to exceed 700 million GEL.
