Senior political figures of Russia and Ukraine are to hold an official meeting in Moscow today. According to the Kremlin’s press service, the meeting will be chaired by the presidents Vladimir Putin and Viktor Yanukovich. The main theme of the meeting will be the economic relations between the two countries. According to reports, a $15 billion loan and cheaper gas prices for Ukraine will be among the issues discussed.
The talks will also concern joint undertakings in areas such as transport, space, agriculture, investment, and others. The signing of a bilateral document package is also planned. However, the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has insisted that no agreement regarding the country’s prospective membership of a united customs union will be signed in Moscow.
The Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sergei Lavrov, met the EU foreign ministers and the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Cathrine Ashton, yesterday. The main subject of the talks were trade agreements between Russia and Ukraine. Ms Ashton once again attempted to convince the Russian delegation that the signing of the EU association agreement would be beneficial to all sides.
Acording to Mr Lavrov, Ukraine is a sovereign state and will take the decision independently, taking the wishes of its population into account.
Thousands of protestors on the Maidan Square in Kiev are awaiting the results of the meeting between Viktor Yanukovich and Vladimir Putin. According to members of the opposition, their future steps will depend largely upon the decisions taken by the presidents in Moscow.
