Tobacco manufacturers will get the opportunity to import raw materials tax-free until 1 January 2015. The move has been initiated by the Chairman of the Parliamentary Commission for Branch Economics Zurab Tkemaladze, who has told TV3 that the legislative body decided to take the companies’ interests into account. According to him, the proposed legislation will also consider abolishing customs duties for the tobacco products. At this stage, only the major importing countries are free from paying the tax, while countries of the West are having to pay a 12% tax, which create an uneven playing field for the importers. The legislative changes are also aiming to aid the local manufacturers, Mr. Tkemaladze has added.
According to Zurab Tkemaladze, the Parliamentary Commission for Branch Economics had been contacted by international organisations with the demand to create a level playing field for the importers of tobacco products.
