The Georgian Young Lawyers’ Association has responded to Vano Merabishvili’s claims about pressure being applied to him by demanding an investigation.
The organisation has stated that Georgian law makes it mandatory for such an investigation to be conducted. However, the GYLA has demanded legislative changes that will determine which body will conduct the investigation into the said case. According to them, international standards demand that in the interests of objectivity, no one department can investigate its own crimes. At present, however, crimes committed by employees of the Prosecutor’s Office get investigated by the same body.
