How effective are the government’s tobacco control activities? According to a statement from the National Disease Control Centre, so far there has been no noticeable drop in the use of tobacco products in the light of the excise tax increase. However, experiences from abroad have shown that tobacco controlling activities are usually followed by a drop in the number of smokers. According to the NDCC spokeswoman Lela Sturua, an anti-smoking media campaign will be carried out, and penalties enforced, as soon as the appropriate legislation comes into effect. The organisation is also planning to conduct research into the effects of a smoking ban on the restaurant business. Results have so far not been forthcoming due to an ineffective application of the law, Ms. Sturua has added.
