Will the award of political asylum to the former head of the Tbilisi Development Fund Giorgi Sabanadze affect the investigations in Georgia? Tbilisi City Council member Zaza Gabunia has told TV3 that the award of Hungarian citizenship to Mr. Sabanadze will complicate matters for the Prosecutor General’s Office, which is investigating the case relating to the activities of the Development Fund. According to him, Mr. Sabanadze’s extradition would have provided valuable information regarding the crimes that were uncovered in the case.
According to the information from the Prosecutor General’s Office, the Italian authorities released Giorgi Sabanadze from custody after he was offered political asylum by Hungary. A spokesman for the Prosecutor’s Office, the issue of Mr. Sabanadze’s extradition is still on the table, and negotiations with the Italian side are ongoing.
Apart from Giorgi Sabanadze, the Hungarian authorities have also offered political asylum to the former Justice Minister Zurab Adeishvili.
