Khatia Moistsrapishvili, a spokeswoman for the Tax Services, has admitted that there is a minor risk of an increase in cigarette contraband due to the recent excise tax increase on tobacco products. However, she states that the Tax Services are already taking measures to tackle the black market.
Economics expert Levan Kalandadze has told TV3 that the risk of cigarette contraband has indeed increased. According to him, excise tax on tobacco is considerably lower in many other countries, and it is therefore highly probable that tobacco products could be imported into Georgia illegally.
Excise tax has increased by 15 tetri on filtered cigarettes, and by 5 tetri on unfiltered ones. This has led to an increase in the retail price of the cigarettes.
