The Minister of Education has responded to the publishers. Tamar Sanikidze has stated that those publishing companies which were speaking about going bankrupt due to the free school textbooks project, and were demanding a meeting with the government, have now been silent for a while. According to her, even though the ministry has fulfilled all of its contractual obligations before the publishers, she is always ready to listen to the private sector.
The government’s initiative to have free school textbooks printed in 20130-14 for pupils across the country by 4 companies was followed by sharp criticism from other publishers, who claimed that such projects would bankrupt the publishing industry.
