Discrepancies in the data on the strength of tractors have led to lengthy prison sentences. However, the attorney representing the imprisoned former employees of the Ministry of Agriculture claims that the Prosecution based its decision on false expertise. Levan Samushia further adds that the Prosecution has presented no credible evidence against the defendants, whose arrests were carried out unlawfully.

According to Mr. Samushia, the purchased Czech company Zetor’s tractor models are not inferior in either strength or quality to the New Holland machines, which had been lobbied for by the Prosecutor’s Office. The attorney further accuses the investigators of influencing the results of the expertise through intimidation.

Several former employees of the Agricilture Ministry, and a professor at the Agricultural University, were arrested and charged in May this year. The former employees, as well as senior members of the company Mechanizator Ltd. have been charged with falsifying evidence and embezzling State funds. The former Minister of Agriculture accepted responsibility for the events, and resigned from his post. The Prosecutor’s Office has declined to respond to Mr. Samushia’s comments.
