How appropriate is it to replace the former IMELI building with a multi-storey hotel? The Arab company Dhabi Group is conducting the construction works on the new Millennium Hotel. According to the art historian Marina Khatiashvili, the project has been poorly planned, and does not have an architectural concept.
The architect Levan Lominashvili has described the planned Millennium Hotel as inappropriate for the area in which it is to be located. According to him, such a building would completely transform the character and distort the appearance of the capital’s Old Town. Mr. Lominashvili regards the height of the hotel as its main problem.
The deputy chairman of the Tbilisi City Council Jaba Samushia has told TV3 that there is no commission in the council to oversee the construction works in the capital’s historic districts – such a lever is only available to the Mayor’s Office. The latter have released a statement saying that they regard the construction of a hotel in the place of the former IMELI building as appropriate.
