The idea of constructing free tourism zones was first voiced by the Georgian President several years ago. Investors were tasked with building hotels in the tourism zones, and were in return exempt from paying income tax for 15 years. An advisor to the head of the National Tourism Agency has told TV3 that construction works are continuing in the Kobuleti tourism zone, but those in Anaklia have been suspended.
According to the regional government of Ajara, one of the three planned hotels in the Kobuleti tourism zone is already functioning. The construction of the two other hotels is being financed by Armenian businessmen, who recently had their deadlines extended. These hotels are expected to open next year.
