Silvio Berlusconi will probably run for office again as the lead center-right candidate in Italy’s general elections next spring, the head of his party said on July 11.

“Many people are asking him to and I believe he will at the end decide to enter the fray,” Angelino Alfano, the head of the People of liberty party, said on the sidelines of the Italian Banking Association’s annual meeting, MF-Dow Jones reported.

Mr. Berlusconi resigned last November, paving the way for Mario Monti to head a technical government with bipartisan support to push through urgent reforms during the euro-area debt crisis.

Earlier this year, Mr. Berlusconi ruled out a return to politics.

Earlier on July 11, Il Giornale, a Milan broadsheet that Mr. Berlusconi’s family owns, hit news stands with a banner headline declaring that Mr. Monti was “tired” of governing.

On July 10 in Brussels, Mr. Monti ruled out a role in a future government after the current legislature ends next spring.
