Former Defence Minister Bacho Akhalaia has been acquitted by the court. Mr. Akhalaia and his co-accused today heard the court’s verdict on charges of inhuman treatment of soldiers and false imprisonment. Seven other individuals had been charged together with Mr. Akhalaia, among them the former Chief of United Headquarters Gigi Kalandadze. Mr. Akhalaia is facing criminal charges in two further cases, namely the torture of seven Special Forces members, and the so-called ‘prison riots.’
