The Municipal Court of Tbilisi has acquitted Bacho Akhalaia and his co-defendants of charges of politically motivated torture and inhumane treatment of 7 members of Georgian Special Forces during his time as the Minister of Internal Affairs. Mr. Akhalaia had protested his innocence from the start. According to the defence team, no acts of torture had taken place, and the Special Forces members had taken part in the Ranger training programme. The presiding judge Davit Mgeliashvili finished studying the case 2 months ago, but the verdict has only been announced today. The prosecution will decide whether or not to appeal after studying the text of the verdict.
