The former Hotel Abkhazia building has become a source of allegations against the Wissol Group. The former owner of the building Besik Khardziani, who had co-owned Hotel Abkhazia for 10 years, claims to have had it taken away from him unlawfully in 2007.
Levan Kalmakhelidze, the Director General of Velagio – a subsidiary company of one of Georgia’s largest business groups Wissol – has told TV3 that the Hotel Abkhazia building had been lawfully purchased by them from the Ministry of the Economy in 2011 for a sum of 4 million GEL. It is as of yet unknown what the demolished hotel building will be replaced with. Probable alternatives include a branch of the Smart supermarket chain, or a multifunctional project.
