The all new 2013 Honda Accord sedan has gone into production in the United States, with the car all set to be launched in the next couple of months in the American market. The European market launch could happen later this year or early next year. The 2013 Honda Accord sedan gets reworked engines with the EarthDreams technology, which bring higher fuel economy, lower tail pipe emissions and better driveability to the table. Both the 2.4 Liter i-VTEC and 3.5 Liter V6 petrol engines are reworked to deliver 10% better fuel economy. Europe will get the 2.2 Liter i-DTEC turbo diesel engine as an additional option.

The big change in the high volume, entry level 2.4 Liter i-VTEC petrol engine is that direct injection now makes an appearance on this four cylinder petrol motor. The 2.4 liter engine is mated to an all new CVT transmission while the 3.5 Liter V6 engine gets a new 6 speed automatic gearbox. Apart from the new engines and transmissions, the 2013 Accord gets a host of new features. Safety gets a big fillip in the 9th generation Accord in the form of features like the LaneWatcher, blind-spot display which boosts visibility of the passenger-side road, Lane Departure Warning and Forward Collision Warning.

While ABS, airbags and ESP are the standard form of equipment in terms of safety kit on the 2013 Accord, new features like rearview camera and Expanded View Driver’s Mirror further improve visibility and therefore safety on the luxury sedan. The all new 2013 Accord comes with revised styling, which is sharper than before, with both the front and the rear ends of the car being restyled. Even with the sharper styling though, the 2013 Accord manages to look reasonably understated enough to appeal to a wide cross section of buyers.

Once the European version of the 2013 Accord gets launched in Europe, expect Honda India to firm up plans to launch this car in the Indian market. Honda though, would do well to bring a diesel version of the 2013 Accord to India, given the big demand that diesel engined cars enjoy in the luxury segment. The Honda Accord’s competitors in India, in the form of the Skoda Superb and the Volkswagen Passat come with diesel engine options while other cars like the Hyundai Sonata Fluidic and the Toyota Camry are making do with petrol engines, and consequently low volumes.
