Will the addition of graphic images to written warnings on cigarette packages lead to an increase in the price of tobacco? The current initiative in this regard has been proposed by the government. A spokesman for one of the largest tobacco importing companies JTI Caucasus has claimed that the addition of images leads to a price increase. The company’s Director of Communications Nikoloz Mchedlishvili has told TV3 that while the images are unlikely to reduce the number of people smoking, they will become a source of additional costs for the tobacco companies, due to the necessary changes in printing equipment, which are expensive. On the other hand, the head of the Disease Control Centre Amiran Gamkrelidze states that the current government initiative will most certainly be productive, and lead to a reduction in the number of smokers.
